You may be wondering when the best time is to plan your fall family session, and I want to help answer any questions you may have! Many people think of mid-October as the best time for photos in Lancaster County because that’s when our fall colors are typically at their peak. But I’m here to tell you that you can start thinking about fall photos several weeks before then. You can still achieve that beautiful fall look in your photos even before the leaves are showing off their best colors.

September

Nature is already starting to change it’s colors in September in Lancaster County. The vibrant colors of summer are starting to fade. Golds and browns are starting to peek through in nature. You can play up this color change at your session by what you wear. Think more tans, browns, deep greens, golds – more deeper, richer shades of color – versus summer colors like garden florals, sage greens, soft blues, etc. Adding in the fall colors of nature and gives you that classic fall look.

October

This month is peak season for colors in Lancaster County. If we are going to have a stunning display of fall colors, it’s going to be in October. But this season also tends to bring with it more rain which can mean we have to be flexible with your session date. It’s one of the most sought after months for a session in the fall before the rush of the holiday season. If you want your session in October, I would say get your session booked by early to mid summer before the rush of everyone realizing they also want fall photos.

November

November in Lancaster County tends to swing back and forth between being really nice and warm, and really cold. Usually most of the foliage is gone leaving bare tree branches and leaves on the ground. You can add cozy textures and those classic autumn colors to your images just by what you wear.

I also have found in my years of shooting sessions outdoors in November that it’s best to cap off outdoor sessions with little ones by the first weekend in November. You don’t want your children to be cold and have red, runny noses for your final images. Many times I’ve had to work quickly to get beautiful images at this time of year. Sometimes I’ve even had to take a short break for everyone to warm up before continuing with photos in this chilly month.

How do I make my images look like fall?

In any of these months you can make your photos look like fall with the colors you wear for your session. Textures and fabrics also play a part in giving your photos that cozy, fall vibe. Think sweaters, knits, and plaids for your next autumn session. Add in a variety of colors instead of sticking to two or three colors. Add patterns of different kinds on different family members.
